South Glamorgan consisted of the county borough of Cardiff along with the southern part of the administrative county of Glamorgan; these areas were divided between two districts: Cardiff and Vale of Glamorgan - an unusually low number of districts, with only the Isle of Wight being the only other county with two. As well as Cardiff, the county included the main towns of Barry, Cowbridge, Llantwit Major and Penarth.
The Vale of Glamorgan is an exceptionally rich agricultural area, and lies in the southern part of Glamorgan, South Wales. With its rugged coastline and rolling countryside is atypical of Wales as a whole, however, it is generally flat. The Vale offers many tourist attractions including Barry Island Pleasure Park, Vale of Glamorgan Railway, and Cosmeston Lakes Country Park.
Cardiff is the capital and largest city in Wales and the ninth largest city in the UK; it is the predominant location for serviced offices in South Glamorgan. The city is the country's commercial centre, and base for most national cultural and sporting institutions. A new waterfront area at Cardiff Bay contains the Senedd building, home to the Welsh Assembly and the Wales Millennium Centre arts complex.
Cardiff Central railway station is the largest railway station in Wales with seven platforms, and over 10 million passengers a year. The station provides direct services to nearby Bridgend and Newport, 'Cross-Wales' services to Wrexham and Holyhead, and also other major cities such as Birmingham, London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow. The M4 is the principal motorway in the region that connects Cardiff with Swansea to the west, and Newport and London to the east.
