Following the Local Government (Wales) Act 1994, West Glamorgan and its component districts were abolished on 1 April 1996, the area being divided into the two unitary authorities of Swansea and Neath and Port Talbot. A West Glamorgan preserved county was created for the limited functions of Lieutenancy and High Shrievalty.
Swansea is a coastal city and county in Wales. It is Wales' second largest city and the UK's twenty-sixth largest city. 90% of the people that work in the area are employed in the service sectors, with relatively high shares in public administration, education & health and banking, finance & insurance, and high proportions of employment in occupations associated with the service sector, such as professional, administrative/secretarial and sales/customer service occupations. This pattern reflects Swansea's role as a service centre for South West Wales.
Swansea is home to the DVLA headquarters based in Morriston which employs around 6,000 people in the city. Other major employers in the city are Admiral Group, HSBC, Virgin Media, BT and Amazon.co.uk.
Serviced offices in West Glamorgan benefit from excellent transport links. The M4 motorway crosses though Swansea and the A48 passes through the north of the city centre. The M4 connects Swansea with towns and cities including Port Talbot, Bridgend, Cardiff, Bristol and London. Swansea railway station is located 10 minutes from Swansea bus station by foot and offers services to Llanelli, Carmarthen, Milford Haven and Haverfordwest to the west, Shrewsbury to the north, Cardiff Central, Newport and London Paddington to the east.
